Sandra Zhao is the CEO and founder of Sugarpie Cupcakes, a bakery that produces regionally sourced, ethically produced cupcakes by and for the community in Nairobi. Before starting Sugarpie, she was the Strategic Planning Manager for One Degree Solar, helping to launch the company in East Africa. She’s lived in Nairobi for over 3 years and eaten across the city’s immigrant-run restaurants. A graduate of UPenn, she has also worked as a line cook in NYC and managed urban agriculture and education projects.
April Dodd is the founder and head instructor of Nairobi’s Open Table Cooking School. Previously, she managed special projects at Sugarpie Cupcakes, taught English in France, and managed a student-run gourmet restaurant at Middlebury College. She has lived in Nairobi for nearly two years, but her oldest roots are in Kentucky.
